Genting Highlands is a cool hill station set amidst the cool mountain air and a majestic 100 million-year-old rainforest. Just 45 minutes away from KL City, it offers indoor and outdoor theme parks, an 18-hole golf course, a casino, and Malaysia’s biggest strawberry farm, all of which are set amidst a majestic 100 million-year-old rainforest. Genting Skyway is one of the two cable car systems serving Genting Highlands, travelling between Gohtong Jaya and the peak of the highlands. While Awana Skyway serves as the main method of transportation, Genting Skyway operates when the former undergoes maintenance and during busy periods, such as weekends and public or school holidays.
Throughout the 3.4 km-long journey, the gondola-style cable car offers breathtaking views of numerous landmarks within the highlands, including a 120-million-year-old rainforest, SkyAvenue Shopping Mall, Chin Swee Caves Temple and the upcoming 20th Century Fox Malaysia Theme Park. Depending on weather conditions, you’ll reach the Highlands Station within 15 to 20 minutes.
Chin Swee Caves Temple’s main square also houses several prayer halls for devotees to pray and meditate during their visit, while those looking to learn more about the Buddhism can explore the depiction of 10 Chambers of Hell, which are set along the fringe of the square. While this attraction aims to discourage evildoing by depicting the painful consequences in the afterlife, it’s relatively suitable for young visitors.
One of the temple’s most recognised landmarks is a nine-storey Pagoda, which is fitted with images of Buddha and thousands of blessing lamps. Visitors are allowed to climb the steps towards the top of the pagoda, where they are greeted with panoramic views of the mountain. Within the temple grounds are gigantic statues of Buddha and Kuan Yin, as well as intricate sculptures of animals and inscriptions of ancient Chinese traditions and beliefs.
Genting Club Casino also shares a space with stylish dining venues, where you can enjoy over 400 types of premium wines, champagnes, cigars, and gourmet food during your stay in Genting Highlands. There’s also an exclusive seven-room karaoke centre with 24-hour butler services, called Be A Star Karaoke. Open daily, this upmarket entertainment centre is a good alternative if gambling isn’t your cup of tea.
As with other casinos in Genting Highlands, Genting Club Casino is only open to non-Muslims and visitors 21 years old and above. Be sure to comply to the smart casual dress code, and that backpacks, electronic gadgets, and cameras are prohibited from entering the casino premises.
One of its most impressive feature is its main atrium, which is fitted with a massive LED display screens and a winch installation called SkySymphony. Visitors can enjoy three themed showcases combining state-of-the-art audio, visual and motion graphics every two hours until 18:00 and every hour until midnight.
Food-wise, you can find reputable dining venues on Level 1 such as Din Tai Fung, Morganfield’s, and Dragon-I. SkyAvenue Genting also houses the first Malaysian branches of London’s Burger & Lobster, Brooklyn’s Motorino, and Paris’ Cafés Richard, all of which attract a huge crowd throughout the day. Alternatively, make your way to the Malaysian Food Street on Level 4, a retro-themed food court selling authentic Malaysian cuisine and snacks by well-loved KL, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, and Ipoh hawker stalls.
The easiest way to get to SkyAvenue Genting is by boarding the Awana SkyWay cable car and disembark at the SkyAvenue Station which is set on Level 4 of the mall. If you’re travelling on the Genting SkyWay cable car, it’s within a 15-minute walk away via a fully-covered tunnel.
Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm offers a variety of vegetables, flowers and mushrooms which are exported to various regions across the country. Acknowledged as the biggest strawberry farm in Malaysia, organically-grown treats are available for purchase here.You can also pick your own strawberries straight from the orchards.
One of its most picturesque features is the Lavender Garden, which is fitted with unique fountains surrounded by blooming lavender flowers. Various kiosks can be found throughout the farm, selling honey, cactus, clothing, soft toys and souvenirs, while visitors feeling a bit peckish can enjoy simple dishes at the onsite strawberry-themed restaurant.
The butterfly area is also fitted with a miniature waterfall, which houses colourful Japanese koi fish and freshwater turtles. Here, visitors can also enjoy expansive views of the lush rainforest and cable cars making their way towards the top of Genting Highlands.
Butterfly Wonderland Genting has over 100 colourful creatures that are also friendly enough to settle onto unsuspecting visitors, though most of them tend to stick to various plants and flowers within the landscaped garden to collect nectar.
There are three types of shows to see at SkySymphony Genting, one of which is called The Forest. Accompanied by tranquil sounds of a rainforest, expect displays of vibrant and fluorescent 3D gesture drawings of endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, Bornean orang utan, Asian elephant, Sumatran rhinoceros, and hornbills.
Urban Symphony is a light-hearted take on the daily life of an urbanite, with colourful animation paired with fast-paced music, while The Goddess showcases real performers who skilfully utilise the attraction’s innovative motion graphics to act as creators conjuring fictional lifeforms into existence.
