Amsterdam: Cycling Capital Of The World

As every discerning traveller knows, bikes outnumber humans in Amsterdam by a significant margin and the city is fully adapted around two-wheeled transportation. In fact, over 400 kilometers of cycle paths trails through the city’s centre, periphery and suburbs, allowing cyclists to quickly travel between Amsterdam’s many neighbourhoods.

Amsterdam Bike Facts

  • Amsterdammers cycle around two million km every day (combined, of course!) – the equivalent of going to the moon and back two and a half times!
  • Around 100,000 bikes are stolen each year!
  • Amsterdam is home to the world’s only museum that can be cycled through – the Rijksmuseum!
  • 36% of all journeys are taken by bike in Amsterdam (and this is significantly higher in parts of the city!)
  • 57% of Amsterdammers cycle every single day
  • The Amsterdam city hall recently banned the notorious Amsterdam beer bikes from the city centre
