Why Kerala’s Kappad Beach Has Once Again Received Blue Flag Certificate

Did you know that it was Kappad Beach in Kozhikode district, Kerala, where Vasco da Gama first landed? Vasco da Gama’s first step in India happened in Kappad Beach in 1498. This momentous event marked the beginning of European trade and colonisation in India, making Kappad Beach a symbol of cultural exchange and maritime exploration. A lot of things have changed for India since then.

Blue Flag Certification of Kappad Beach

The Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas that meet stringent criteria related to water quality, environmental management, safety, and amenities. Kappad Beach’s pristine waters, clean surroundings, and sustainable tourism practices have earned it this prestigious accolade, placing it among the select few beaches in India to receive this honour.

The Kappad beach once again received the ‘Blue Flag’ certificate, an eco label issued by Denmark International Foundation For Environment Education. Kappad beach is the first beach in the entire state to receive the recognition. The same beach had received the certification three years earlier as well.

Kappad beach was conferred with the prestigious title taking into consideration its environmental friendly approach, proper use of solar energy, effective waste disposal mechanisms and protection of biodiversity.
