Kerala To Host International Paragliding Competition 2024 At Vagamon

An international paragliding festival will be held at Vagamon in Kerala on March 14 to 17. The event is jointly organized by Kerala Tourism and the Adventure Sports and Sustainable Tourism Academy (ASSTA). About fifty pilots from different parts of the world are expected to participate in the gala event. A trial for the event was recently held at Kolahalamedu in Vagamon.

Vagamon is identified as the most potential destination for paragliding in Asia. Vagamon is situated at the border of Kottayam and Idukki districts of Kerala at an altitude of 1, 100 metres above sea level. The wind speed of 15 km on the Vagamon hill is ideal for paragliding. The Western Ghats to which Vagamon belongs is considered to be a safest and all-time destination. The low hills, rocky terrain and flatlands provide ideal conditions for paragliding.

This site at Vagamon is situated on the hills of Kolahalamedu, 4 km from Vagamon. The place offers great opportunities for XC as well as ridge soaring, according to the officials of ASSTA. The site is easily accessible, with grassy launch pads. There is a 10 km long ridge with 3,000 feet from top to bottom The site is facing North/ East and has a steady wind through out the season. The season starts from September and offers great flying conditions until January and again, from March to May.
